New Hockey Canada Rule on Maltreatment

2021-09-29

Hockey Canada Rule 11: Maltreatment Playing Rule 2021-22

As we kick-off the 2021-22 hockey season, please familiarize yourselves with the new rule that was recently added to Hockey Canada's Rulebook.

Rule 11 brings together all forms of maltreatment under one section of the rulebook. Maltreatment includes volitional acts that result in harm or the potential for physical or psychological harm. Rule-11 provides guidelines for escalating penalties based on the severity of the inappropriate behaviour from players and team officials (e.g. penalties can range from time in the box to in-person hearings and possible suspensions). For more information on Rule-11, you can read the announcement here, and can refer to section 11 of the Hockey Canada Rulebook (section 11, pg 142).

In addition to having a more comprehensive approach for maltreatment during games, Hockey Canada has also approved a national reporting system for incidents of discriminatory taunts, insults or intimidation, both on the ice and outside of game play. The new rule and reporting system includes, but is not limited to, discrimination based on race, ethnic origin, skin colour, religion, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and disability.

The Sting association will not tolerate this behavior in any situation, on or off the iceLeague officials have taken this rule to heart and intend on applying it to its fullest extent.

If you run into an issue related to maltreatment, which we sincerely hope you do not, please bring it to the attention of your liaison, coach or manager. If required, they will escalate and the board will get involved.

Having a positive and inclusive culture is critically important to a successful hockey season. Please share this message with your players and remind them of the importance of upholding all Hockey Canada rules, including Rule 11.
