Hello,

Welcome to the 2025-2026 Ottawa Sting U12B tryouts! I am Greg Roeske, the U12 Liaison for the upcoming tryouts. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions throughout the U12B tryout process and kindly refrain from contacting the U12B coach directly, as I am your point of contact throughout tryouts.

This email is intended to provide you an overview of the process and help set expectations for the approaching tryout sessions.

Schedule:

The U12B tryouts will begin on Tuesday, September 2nd, 2025 and the team is expected to be formed by mid-September. Players who are released from B tryouts may continue on with tryouts for their home association once released.

Here is the initial schedule, which can also be viewed on the Sting website here:

http://ottawasting.com/team_schedule.php?view=2&month=9&year=2025&team_id=919330

Sept. 2nd - TD Place - 4pm to 6pm

Sept. 6th - Ottawa U Arena 1 - 5pm to 7pm

Sept. 7th - Carleton U Rink A - 12pm to 2pm

Note: TD Place does not have free or validated parking for ice times, if you choose to park onsite it is at your own expense

Tryout Sessions:

The initial tryout sessions will include both individual skill assessments and intrasquad gameplay. Players will be evaluated on core hockey skills such as skating, stick handling, passing, and shooting, as well as on gameplay attributes including hockey IQ, teamwork, competitiveness, and overall game sense.

While player position preferences are noted during registration, players may be asked to try different positions throughout the tryout process. This flexibility helps ensure the strongest possible roster is assembled.

Please ensure you arrive early enough to have your player ready well in advance of the start of each tryout session.  It is recommended to 45-60 minutes before the scheduled start time for the session.

Tryout Jerseys:

Throughout the tryouts, players will be identified by their tryout jersey number. Please ensure your player has both a white and a black tryout jersey with corresponding numbers. Goalies only require a single black jersey.

  • If you requested a set of Sting tryout/practice jerseys during registration, they will be available for pickup at the first tryout session.

  • If you did not request tryout jerseys but require them, please contact me as soon as possible with your player’s jersey size information.

It is your player’s responsibility to bring both jerseys to every session. At the first tryout session, I will check in all players and verify jersey numbers before the session begins. Please have your player wear solid black/white socks if they have them.

I will be at the first session an hour early to issue jerseys to those who ordered them during registration.

Goalie Evaluation Sessions:

There will be a special goalie skills assessment that only goalies must attend.

The U12 goalie session will be held at Richcraft Sensplex on Friday, September 5, 2025, at 7pm in the CIBC rink.

Volunteers:

For each session we will require volunteers for hall/changeroom monitoring, opening doors (on opposite bench / door as your child), trainers and clock. If you are qualified (e.g. trainers) or available to help, please reach out to me so I can maintain a list of volunteers for each session.

Coach Letter:

If you have not yet had the opportunity to read the U12B coach’s letter from Jon Frood, I would encourage you to read it. You can find it on the Sting website here:

Releases:

We will do our best to communicate releases as quickly as possible after a session where releases are scheduled, but it may not be possible until the following day. You will also receive a communication if your athlete is continuing in the tryout process. Releases will be communicated via e-mail and feedback requests will be limited to the final releases.

While tryouts can be a stressful time, the process is designed to place every player at the appropriate level for their development. It is important that your player arrives well-rested and well-hydrated to perform at their best. We hope your player enjoys their tryout experience and has fun while out on the ice!

Please check your email daily for further communications that will contain tryout session details and assignments. Each email will also be posted on the Sting website under U12B in the “News” section: http://ottawasting.com/index.php?team_id=919330

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.
Looking forward to seeing you all at tryouts!

Thanks,

Greg Roeske
